MENSCHEN ON-FARM GOOD

MENSCHEN ON-FARM GOOD ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY Alongside the substantially higher selling price for the carcass and for the calves, the quality of the milk also contributes to better earnings for the Matthiesens. “The average milk price here in summer lay at 20c/l. We earned a little more at 23c/l because Fleckvieh milk has more protein and fat content. The animals’ good health means we also achieve a much lower cell count and good lactose value. Problems such as gastric torsion, that we suffered regularly with in the old herd, no longer appear. Calving is also much less problematical. In the last 30 years with 50 calvings per year, we have only had to assist three times.” With this background, and because most cows are now milked for over eight lactations, daily production of the Matthiesen cows is less important. “Milk yield is around 25 l/day in summer. That is pure production from pasture without us having to supplement with feed to any extent. The cows graze all the time from April through to November, a period when we also save a lot because less forage harvesting and transport is required.” THE GRASS IS DECISIVE This farmer is convinced that, with the difficult conditions of the clay-content marsh soil, one has to keep all parameters in view as farmer to achieve good results over the long term. “Important for our soil is humus, pH and drainage. However, the differences in soil structure are dramatic, depending on whether the soil is old marsh, new marsh or geest.” The Matthiesen farm’s 80 ha features around one third arable and the rest grassland. “On many locations here, grass is the only plant that will grow, although its quality is very good. Mainly we work with grass that can be harvested for forage and grazed after the first and second cut. Only immediately around the steading do we have permanent grazing.” Where pasture has been new-established, e.g., through reseeding, Karl-Heinz Matthiesen puts a lot of value on robust, older varieties of grass. “Some of our varieties are so old that it is nowadays difficult to get suitable mixtures for permanent pasture. While new varieties are unbeaten for bulk yield and energy content, mineral content is often missing because regrowth is very rapid and minerals take longer to re-establish themselves in grass.” The Matthiesens spread the costs of their forge harvesting machinery by using it on other farms. Boy Matthiesen also works as part-owner and manager of another dairy herd in addition to helping run the family farm. INTERFARM MACHINERY USE All outside work, except for silage harvesting and mowing, is carried out by farmer Matthiesen himself. “We are completely self-sufficient as far as forage mechanisation is concerned and hereby put our trust completely in Krone equipment.” The machinery: swather, front and rear-mounted mower combination with a total 7 m working width and tedder is, however, over-dimensional for our 50 ha grassland.” One ground for the big machines is the work rate capacity this offers, explains Boy Matthiesen. “Our field sizes lie at 10 ha on average and this makes the working width worthwhile. We also use the machinery on other farms. This means we are mowing, turning and tedding almost another 100 ha for surrounding dairy farms.” As Boy Matthiesen further explains, with just a few exceptions they have hardly any regular customers for this work, although they help a neighbouring contractor with forage harvests at peak work times. “Important in hay production and also for the grass harvest is the work rate. With our mower combination we can manage up to 10 ha per hour. With the Swadro 1000, too, we can achieve similar work rates meaning this implement works very well complementing the contractor’s high performance silage harvester.” 34

EasyCut F 320 CV and CR NEW ATTACHMENT CONCEPT New Book “110 Jahre Krone” Krone presents for the season 2016/17, with the push-type and pull-type headstock, two new attachment concepts for the front-mounted mowers EasyCut F 320 CV with high performance steel tine conditioner and EasyCut F 320 CR with roller conditioner. Both variants of the 3.16 m working width front mower can be directly mounted onto tractor Cat. II hitch lower arms. With the EasyCut F 320 CV in push-type configuration, a Weiste triangle is not required. This leaves more room at the headstock for attachment of the large-dimensioned tractor-attached springs, optimally relieving strain on the mower. Additionally, the push-type attachment EXTENDING THE KRONE HISTORY On October 8, 1906 master blacksmith Bernhard Krone and his wife Anna moved from Ochtrup in Münsterland to Spelle. Here, Bernhard Krone established a country blacksmith business for shoeing horses and making repairs and thus laid the cornerstone of today’s Krone Group. Right in time for the company’s 110th anniversary, Nicola Krone has continued the written history of the machinery factory now presented in a new company chronicle entitled “110 Jahre Krone”. As well as a supplemented review of the years 2006-2016, the layout of the book has been completely revised. On more than 250 pages, the reader finds innumerable fascinating insights – from the first challenges that the company had to overcome, about the strategic decisions that have had to be made, right through to current requirements within the Krone Group, now headed by the fourth generation of the family. A large number of eye-witness accounts and anecdotes from former employees and increases efficiency through its lightness, giving more grass sward protection through less weight bearing on the tractor front axle. The headstock in pull configuration decouples ground contour adjustment from the tractor front hydraulics, meaning the mower can be very rapidly mounted on different tractors. An additional speciality of this attachment method is that its forward attachment point on the mower automatically helps reduces power requirement during mowing. The mower units with both machines feature SmartCut mower beds that guarantee a high quality of cut, even under the most difficult conditions. The standard equipment patented Krone mower bed SafeCut system protects against damage by foreign bodies. customers make this lovingly illustrated publication an easy and enjoyable read.
